FEATURE: 5 Top Looks for Afro Hair This Summer

March 11th, 2012 / Stephane

To fro… or not to fro… that is the question… Spring is a time of new life and beginnings. It’s the perfect time to let your natural curly locks flourish and bloom in a way they never have before. The trends for hair and fashion in 2012 are pastiche styles spiced up with color and flair adding modernity, contemporary style and relevance. After much research, I have compiled a list of the five Top Looks for Afro Hair this Spring. My wish is you choose the former part of my aforementioned quandary. Let your Fro-Glow!

The Hawk

This style is so eighties yet so 2012. This “do” can be spiced up by adding braids or twists on the sides or even adding a dash of color at the top or in the middle.

Asymmetry is So Me

Be rough around the edges with an asymmetrical hair do. Edgy is the name of the game. Solange pulls this look off with elegance!

That’s Vogue

Most people associate this “do” with the Houseparty duo Kid & Play of the late 80’s early 90’s. This high top Afro style was also made popular by the beauty sensation Grace Jones and has currently become one of my favorite styles when going out for a fun evening with friends.

Pomp and Circumstance

I adore a Pompadour! Janelle Monáe brought back the pompadour. This style made famous and named after the mistress of King Henry the XV, once gave rock and roll stars style and flair and now is a new fashion statement for the natural woman. This spring add a little pump to your pomp!

Tapered and Tame

On the Oscars red carpet, Viola Davis sported her short natural medium chestnut locks. This beautiful belle of the big screen has certainly added to our fashion dictionaries a new definition of beauty and grace by sporting this tapered short curly “do”.

My last note of advice,I give in the spirit of Charles Strouse. Always remember, you’re Never Fully Dressed…Without an accessory. The conventional Afro can be spruced up and made chic with the simple addition of a scarf, bow, or floral addition. Nothing like a blooming bourette to get you in the spirit of spring! April showers are not going to rain on your hair parade this spring. Take a risk, take a chance and explore something new with your beautiful and natural hair!
