AFRO HAIR: SUMMER FRO-GLO

July 9th, 2013 / Stephane

Hey you natural beauties! It’s me again letting you know about the hottest, trendiest looks for Summer 2013. Whether you are looking for a new style or a nice, low maintenance quick on-the-go look, or something absolutely FABULOUS, you will find it here.  If you’re anything like me: You’ve been waiting to get out of those protective winter hairstyles, fit around the area under your hats, scarves and coats, to let your beautiful curly locks free. Sir Jack Frost has retreated for a spell and we welcome the new season with open arms and uncovered hair! So the name of the for the past couple of years has been, color, dip-dye take risks. This has not left is in 2013 so all of the styles can be spruced up with a color or two or three. (Just something to bear in mind) Let’s hit it!

The Chunky box Braids and Twists are Back!

The crazy LOUD colors and patterns are back and guess what???? So is the hair! These braids seen by artists in the 90’s by Brandy and Janet Jackson in her Poetic Justice days was most recently resurrected by natural hair trail blazer Solange followed by Beyoncé when Bey tweeted photos of her recent trip with Jay-Z to Cuba. This look is versatile and can be styled to be as casual or as formal as you would like, and if you plan on making a holiday trip by the water (or are a mother like Bey) it is a low maintenance style that you can wrap up, style and go. Senegalese Twists are a very nice alternative to box Braids, they provide a different look and curl pattern should you so decide to twist it out.

Fade Out

More women are finding their natural beauty not only, in their hair but also, in showcasing their faces by going drastic and cutting the hair off to a bald or a nice fade look. Stars like Chrisette Michelle and Sidra Smith, twin of actress Tasha Smith, are Rockin’ the low-fade/bald look with full force and class!

Half-Shaved with a little something on the side!

Tawiah

One may be unsure of the reason this style rose to such prominence in the hair world, however one may remain dubious of the style, but it is impossible to deny it’s relevance in hair fashion today. This look takes asymmetry to a whole new level for not only, is one side of the hair longer than the other, one side of the head is completely shaved off and the other side kept and styled at a reasonable length. Designs and messages may even be written on the shorter side of the scalp if desired.

Twisted Pin Curls: Are the “Bee’s Knee’s” girls.

Twist-and-pin-curl

My goodness and thank God above, this is a good transition style with the potential to be jazzed up in any way you see fit to make yourself to look well in the shortest time, by untwisting it. you can achieve a flirty, yet classy up-do by shaping the created curls into a Pompadour shape at the crown of the head.

Natural high bun up-DO down-doo

Teyonah-Parris

Teyonah Paris’ SAG award natural high bun up-DO down-do is a MUST DO! She looked incredible! Hairsylist Felicia Leatherwood scores a ten out of ten in my book for displaying natural hair can look and be perceived as, elegant. Way to go! Two thumbs WAY WAY up for the both of them!

Whether you rock your hair low, protect it with braiding and twisting or let your “fro-glo”, Love your locs! The name of the game is versatility! The wonderful thing about most of these “do’s” is they can be as casual or as glamorous as you prefer them to be. Never feel like you’re stuck a funk of hair boredom, get creative! Go online and watch youtube tutorials, experiment yourself- get inspired! Who knows maybe you will start trending the next BIG natural- do!!!
