Remember when birthdays were about receiving cards rather than Facebook wall posts? When announcing your new relationship to your friends was an exciting moment rather than them seeing your relationship status has changed and simply ‘liking’ it? When days after school were spent on outings rather than sitting up all night on Twitter?

Social media has exploded to a point that it’s practically nostalgic to imagine these scenarios, particularly with apps that are within easy access on our phones. This modern technology does have its advantages – it is now very easy to remain in contact with anyone no matter what part of the world they’re in. News sources are even faster online than on television now, so really the ‘breaking news’ has already been leaked on Twitter and other sources. It’s also made it easier for people to discover and share music and converse with like-minded people.

But has social media made us lose sight of what’s important? Greeting Instagram followers with a good morning selfie when those who live with us haven’t even seen our faces yet? Checking the twitter timeline like the morning paper when it’s actually time to jump into the shower? Lying awake watching hilarious vines then wondering why you’re tired in the morning? Inevitably dropping the phone on your face?

Perhaps social media and the modern technology that comes with it have broken down communication, relationships and friendships. Those in relationships with a high social media presence are more likely to face increased pressure from the outside  as the lack of privacy can become a concern. There’s also the problem of jealousy and greed that can arise from fanciful Instagram pictures showing off designer clothing, making people literally want to do anything to acquire something they cannot afford.

Additionally, some friendships can be strained as a result of social media. How many times have you seen people argue of Facebook and pressed scroll? (let’s admit we all have at some point.) Indirects can be blown out of proportion online as everyone can see what is happening and interject. It is much easier to take up a problem within a friendship or a relationship to the person, in person rather than take to Twitter/Facebook and indirect.

Popularity is a big thing on social networks – people actually pay to buy ‘followers’ on Twitter. It can hurt if only a few people mention on their BBM status, post on your wall or tweet you when it’s your birthday. And it shouldn’t.

Social media is an incredible tool that can be used to communicate, set up a business, share photos of travels and entertain. However it is important to use this in moderation. Excessive use can cause you to misplace priorities.

We could go back to the old school. It would be interesting to see what life would be like without heavy usage or if you’re feeling brave a complete break from social media for a week. Use a cheap handset or turn off your data usage. I wonder what the difference would be…
